Otto lives with his uncle, an ambitious mechanic and creator of mechanical animals that live in the orangery. when a break-in occurs and many parrots are stolen, the police blame Florence, a street child, who sits outside the orangery and draws. Otto and Florence work together to solve the crime, encountering pirates and an arch villain along the way.
