The Lincoln cent was the first regualr U.S. coin to portray a specific individual and was introduced in 1909 to memorialize the centennial of Lincoln's birth. In 1959 the original reverse design was replaced with the Lincoln Memorial in recognition of the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's birth.
